Gender Identity

We are socialized at every stage in life to conform to our gender identity. Societal reinforcement of tendencies of gender identity is relentless. For example, in hospitals, little girls are wrapped in pink and little boys in blue. This difference in colors influences how we learn and how we internalize our role in our society.

Girls tend to grow up to play feminine roles and boys tend to grow up to play masculine roles. This differentiation of gender identity has implications in social stratification. The videos given below will provide you with a better understanding of the differentiation of sexual identity from an earlier generation.

Search for and watch an episode of at least one of the following shows. You may find these videos using a variety of search methods including visiting your local library, using Netflix or your local video store, or searching on YouTube. If you have difficulty locating an episode of one of the following shows, contact your instructor for assistance in finding an alternative.

  • I Love Lucy
  • All in the Family
  • The Mickey Mouse Club
  • The Honeymooners
  • Leave it to Beaver
  • Father Knows Best
  • Gilligan’s Island
  • The Brady Bunch
  • I Dream of Jeannie

As you watch the video, ask yourself the following questions:

  • To what extent have things changed and to what extent have they remained the same in regards to gender roles, expectations, division, and identity from the time this show was originally popular and today?
  • How conscious and sensitive are the characters regarding gender prejudice, power inequality, and subordination?
  • Did they take inequality of the sexes for granted?

Based on your readings and understanding that you have gathered after watching the above-noted video, write a short biographical description of your life if you were to wake up tomorrow morning in the time period of the video you watched and find you have a different gender identity. Write a description of how you lived your life a day after your hypothetical change in gender as you answer the following questions:

  • Discuss how you would react on finding out that your sex is opposite. Would you feel a sense of relief, indifference, or elation? Why?
  • Discuss three ways your attitude towards the opposite sex was enlightened or would change as a result of what you learned from this project.  If you would not change your attitude, why?
  • Write down the ideas and attitudes you have taken for granted a member of your actual gender. Consider how your roles at home and in the office would change if you were a member of the opposite gender.
  • Relate the ideas of sexism and racism to the videos.  How do you think sexism and racism have changed since the 1950s?

Assignment 1: LASA # 2: PowerPoint Presentation

Utilizing the information you compiled for your literature review paper, and the feedback you received from your instructor about the literature review, prepare a 10-15 minute Power Point presentation on your topic, summarizing the key points and conclusions. Be sure to direct this presentation to an audience in the community. For example, if your paper pertained to a topic in developmental psychology, direct your presentation toward parents, or a parenting center. If your topic pertained to substance abuse, direct it toward a community service agency which may use this information for educating teens or parents about preventing drug use, or current clients about treatments and facilities available. Please state in your presentation the specific audience toward whom your presentation is aimed. Include a reference page in APA format, as well as speaker notes and an audio file with your presentation.

Your slides should provide answers to the following questions:

  • What was your topic?
  • What question did you hope to answer by completing this literature review paper? Explain the practical implications of the conclusions of the literature review and the audience to which they are directed.
  • Given the results of your literature review, what is/are the prevailing argument(s)? In other words, which of those is supported by the existing evidence? Be sure to include full coverage of the arguments, including strengths and weaknesses of each of them, supported by your findings from reviewing the relevant articles.
  • Did the researchers consider multicultural factors in their studies? If not, what factors may be involved? What multicultural factors should future studies include?
  • What ethical issues are related to your topic and/or discussed in the studies you reviewed?
  • How do the conclusions of your literature review relate to the various specialization areas in psychology? Tie them to as many as apply from the following areas: biological, cognitive, developmental, social, personality theory, psychopathology, and applied psychology.
  • How can the conclusions of your literature review inform the population towards whom your presentation is directed? How can they apply this information to their daily lives? What advice or ‘take home message’ can you provide to your audience based on the research you reviewed?
  • What research question could you ask in order to further develop this area of study?
  • Why is your research question important and relevant to the current work being done on your topic?

Your presentation should also follow these guidelines:

  • It should be approximately 10-15 minutes in length.
  • It should be clear, concise, and professional.  Writing should be free of spelling and grammatical errors; it should conform to current APA style (including any in-text citations).
  • It should include graphs, tables, figures, or images illustrating your ideas.
  • There should be a final slide listing references in current APA style.
  • The bulk of the text should be placed in the Notes pages of each slide. Keep the amount of text on the slide, itself, to a minimum.
  • You should record an audio file of your oral presentation. You should also type the text of the speech you would give while showing these slides to an audience should be typed into the Notes area.  If you are unable to use the audio feature, the Notes text will suffice.
  • You can refer to the Power Point tips document provided in the Doc Sharing section of the course.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

You are required to submit this assignment to Turnitin. Please refer to the directions in the Student Success Center.

This benchmark assignment assesses the following programmatic competencies: 5.2: Interpret motivation behind crime.

How does the autonomic nervous system function in the maintenance of homeostasis?

Autonomic (ANS) is made of motor nerves travelling from CNS to PNS. All actions of ANS are involuntary and help in maintaining a stable internal physiological state.

Autonomic nevous system has two distinct outlets: sympathetic and parasympathetic. First is primarily responsible for adjusting our body to stress while the latter is responsible for slowing down the physiology. Thus sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of ANS are antagonistic systems working together to maintain internal balance of the body.

A very short list of their functions could be like following:

Both sympathetic and parasympathetic systems arise from CNS and terminate in designated organs or tissues. Axonic ends of neurons secrete different neurohumor substances and accordingly excitatory or inhibitory signals are delivered to the organs.

Each organ receives both sympathetic and parasympathetic connections, hence its function could be modified depending on activity levels or physiological demands, and a stable state could always be restored.

PSYCHOLOGY ASSIGNMENT

Begin this assignment by reading this article which raises the interesting question of whether we would have had great works of art and music without “madness”.

·      blogs.scientificamerican.com-Creativity Madness and Drugs.pdf  (NOTE:  if the link does not open I will also attach this document separately)

After reading the article, write a thoughtful reflection addressing one or more of the questions posed at the end of the article (e.g., Should artists and writers with bipolar disorder be treated with drugs even though this will diminish their creative drive and possible success as an artist?)

Your reflection should be a minimum of 1 page in length to receive full credit.  If you would like to include an example of an artist you are particularly interested in, and how his/her work may have been influenced by their mental health issues, that would be a way to lengthen your reflection to the 1-page requirement.
