Explain how the genogram you created might help you address the needs of the Hernandez family.

Report Issue

As you have been exploring human behavior and the social environment, you have likely increased your awareness of the many biological, psychological, and sociological factors that affect individual behavior. Human relationships are complex, and social workers may find it difficult to keep these important interactions in mind when addressing a client’s needs. Murray Bowen (as cited in Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2016, p. 595) developed the genogram, a tool to help social workers and other practitioners create a record of family relationships. Once a social worker creates a genogram for a client, he or she may refer to it when analyzing the client’s situation.

To prepare for this Assignment, become familiar with how to create a genogram, which is presented in this week’s resources. Also, review this week’s media about Juan and Elena Hernandez’s visit with their social worker.

By Day 7

Submit a 2- to 4-page paper that includes the following:

  • 1. A genogram of the Hernandez family
  • 2. An analysis of the Hernandez family’s case based on the genogram including the following information.
    • 3. Identify an element of the Hernandez family’s case that may influence the way Juan and Elena Hernandez address their issue with the social worker.
    • 4. Explain how the genogram you created might help you address the needs of the Hernandez family.

Explain how the APA’s Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct might influence the reliability and/or generalizability of the chosen findings

Report Issue

In this assignment, you will create the thesis statement for your Final Assignment. The thesis is the statement of your perspectives on the literature. It should also include the rationale and relevant empirical and theoretical background supporting your perspectives. The primary objective of this assignment is to outline specific areas of inquiry you intend to answer in the course of the Integrative Literature Review. Although they may change during the course of the review, articulating these areas of inquiry early will help provide focus and direction for your research.  Begin by introducing the areas of inquiry to be included in your Integrative Literature Review. Explain your perspective on the literature and include how you arrived at this viewpoint, how the literature you have chosen to include supports this viewpoint, and why this perspective is relevant to the field of psychology.  Based on your introduction, briefly discuss the literature you have chosen by integrating concepts developed from your four different content domains. Be sure to utilize at least one peer-reviewed source per domain. Construct clear and concise arguments using evidence-based psychological concepts and theories to support your perspectives regarding the literature.   To conclude your assignment, identify any overarching implications shown in the studies and describe how these influenced your perspectives on the literature.  The Integrative Literature Review: Thesis Statement •Must be two to three double-spaced pages in length (not including title and reference pages) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. •Must include a separate title page with the following: ◦Title of paper ◦Student’s name ◦Course name and number ◦Instructor’s name ◦Date submitted •Must begin with an introductory paragraph that has a succinct thesis statement. •Must address the topic of the paper with critical thought. •Must end with a conclusion that reaffirms your thesis. •Must use at least four peer-reviewed sources (one source per domain). •Must document all sources in APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. •Must include a separate reference list that is formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

This is the final paper information just in case you need it:

Integrative Literature Review

Pathbuilder is being used for this assignment. Please be certain to complete the “Survey Acknowledgement Quiz” this week in order to submit the Integrative Literature Review. You will not be allowed to submit your Final Paper until you have completed the quiz this week.  The primary goal of this literature review is to integrate concepts from four different content domains within the larger field of psychology. The four content domains should be chosen from previous coursework in this program. In this paper, students will review the findings in the individual empirical articles, organize the research in a meaningful way, evaluate the reliability, validity, and generalizability of the research findings, and present an integrated synthesis of the research that sheds new light on the topics within and across the four domains.  The result of a successful integrative literature review may be a significant contribution to a particular body of knowledge and, consequently, to research and practice. Therefore, before writing this literature review, substantive new research must be conducted via the Internet and within the Ashford University Library for each of the four chosen domains. A minimum of six sources must be included for each of the four domains. Although content from literature reviews completed in prior courses within this program may be included, it may not constitute the total research for the individual domains addressed within this assignment. No more than four sources from previous literature reviews completed in this program may be utilized for this integrative review.  The headings listed below must be used within the paper to delineate the sections of content. These sections include the following: a clear introduction that provides a general review and organizes the research in a meaningful way; a discussion in which the evidence is presented through analysis, critique, and synthesis; and a conclusion in which the discussion is drawn together in a meaningful way, the claims of the introduction are brought to a logical closure, and new research is proposed.  Introduction •Provide a conceptual framework for the review. •Describe how the review will be organized. The questions below may be used to guide this section. ◦What are the guiding theories within the domains? ◦How are the domains connected? ◦Are there competing points of view across the domains? ◦Why is the integration of these domains important? ◦What is the history of these domains? ◦What are the related theories or findings? •Describe how the literature was identified, analyzed, and synthesized. •How and why was the literature chosen? •What is your claim or thesis statement?  Discussion •Provide the analysis, critique, and synthesis for the review.  Analysis •Examine the main ideas and relationships presented in the literature across the four domains. •Integrate concepts from the four different content domains within the larger field of psychology. •What claim(s) can be made in the introduction? •What evidence supports the claim(s) made in the introduction?  Critique  •Evaluate the reliability, validity, and generalizability of the chosen research findings. •How well does the literature represent the issues across the four domains? •Identify the strengths and the key contributions of the literature. •What, if any, deficiencies exist within the literature? •Have the authors omitted any key points and/or arguments? •What, if any, inaccuracies have been identified in the literature? •What evidence runs contrary to the claims proposed in the introduction, and how might these be reconciled with the claims presented? •Explain how the APA’s Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct might influence the reliability and/or generalizability of the chosen findings. •Did the ethical issues influence the outcomes of the research? •Were ethical considerations different across the domains?  Synthesis •Integrate existing ideas with new ideas to create new knowledge and new perspectives. •Describe the research that has previously been done across these domains, as well as any controversies or alternate opinions that currently exist. •Relate the evidence presented to the major conclusions being made. •Construct clear and concise arguments using evidence-based psychological concepts and theories to posit new relationships and perspectives on the topics within the domains.  Conclusion •Provide a conclusion and present potential future considerations. •State your final conclusion(s). •Synthesize the findings described in the discussion into a succinct summary. •What questions remain? •What are the possible implications of your argument for existing theories and for everyday life? •Are there novel theories and/or testable hypothesizes for future research? •What do the overarching implications of the studies show? •Where should the research go from this point to further the understanding of these domains and the greater study of psychology?

CASE STUDY (DAWN)

Terry and Bill, married for 5 years, are a Black couple who live in a small suburban community. Terry graduated from high school and worked as a receptionist before her marriage to Bill, a communications company manager. Because both of them believed that mothers should stay at home with young children, Terry quit her job when she had her first child, who is now an intense and active 4-year-old daughter named Dawn. Both parents were very attentive to their daughter and enjoyed caring for and playing with her when she was a baby. As Dawn got older, she became more active and assertive. When Dawn fussed, resisted, or showed frustration, Terry was patient and affectionate with her. She was able to coax Dawn out of her bad temper by making up little games that Dawn enjoyed. Both Terry and Bill liked Dawn’s spirited personality. Because her parents wanted her to have access to playmates, Dawn attended a church-related program for toddlers and preschoolers three mornings a week.

When Dawn was 3 years old, Terry gave birth to the couple’s second child, a son named Darren. Soon after the baby’s birth, the family learned that Darren had a congenital heart problem that would require ongoing medical treatment and a specific regimen of care at home. Darren was an irritable baby. He fussed for long periods and was very difficult for Terry to soothe. Because of Darren’s need for medical care and the limitations of Bill’s medical insurance, the couple soon found themselves in financial difficulty. Bill began to take on overtime work at the company to subsidize some of the bills and was away from the home several nights a week and part of each weekend.

Terry found the care of two demanding young children and the worries about money to be increasingly more stressful. She was always tired and seemed to have less patience with her family. whereas she once had the leisure time to read to Dawn, to take her for walks, and to help her master tasks that proved frustrating, Terry now had to shift her attention to the care of her medically fragile infant. Because Dawn looked so grown-up compared to the vulnerable newborn, Terry began to perceive her daughter as able to do many things for herself. When Dawn demonstrated her neediness by clinging or whining, Terry became abrupt and demanded that Dawn stop. Many battles revolved around Terry’s new rule that Dawn have a nap or “quiet time” each afternoon so that mother and baby could get some rest.

One day, Dawn’s preschool teacher, Mrs. Adams, asked to speak with Terry. Mrs. Adams noted that Dawn’s behavior was becoming a problem in the morning preschool sessions. Dawn had begun throwing toys when she became upset and often refused to cooperate in group activities. Terry was greatly embarrassed to hear about her daughter’s misbehavior. Dawn was the only Black child in the small class, and her mother wondered if this was part of the problem. When Terry got home, she put her tearful, clinging daughter in her room for time-out for being bad at school. She loved Dawn, but she could not tolerate this kind of behavior, especially when Darren needed so much of her time. She began to wonder if she and Bill had spoiled their daughter. Terry feared that Dawn would have problems when it came time for her to enter kindergarten if they didn’t take a strong stand with her now.

Discussion Questions

1.

Explain Dawn’s behavior from an attachment point of view. How would you describe Dawn’s attachment history?

2.     Describe Terry’s parenting style. Has the style changed? What suggestions would you make to Terry and Bill about handling this problem?

3.      What are some of the contextual influences on Dawn’s behavior?

Identify the life stage he or she is in, along with the psychological crisis each is experiencing

Report Issue

The purpose of this assignment is to use what you have learned about lifespan theories, models of resilience, and psychosocial development to assess how well individuals and families are functioning in relation to all three of these areas. To address realistic situations without violating personal rights to privacy, you will view the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding, or one of the other approved films for this assignment, in order to provide a case scenario.

If you have not yet viewed the movie, you need to do so to complete this assignment. Each movie represents characters in multiple life stages. Identify three characters moving through a different life stage and focus on details that will make your analysis applicable to your specialization.

Directions

For this assignment, imagine you are a counselor working with each of these three characters. Now, conduct the following analysis for each character:

· Identify the life stage he or she is in, along with the psychological crisis each is experiencing.

· Apply psychosocial developmental theory to the situation presented, from the perspective of a counselor:

o Conceptualize your ideas for the developmental tasks of each character selected, grounding your conceptualization in your own area of specialization.

o Include a discussion of the character’s life and factors that might affect behaviors, including cultural and other influences related to the stage of development assessed. To the extent that it is relevant for each character, include an analysis of interrelationships among work, family, and other life roles. Include an analysis of the impact of cultural influences, as well. Refer to specific actions and words of the characters in the movie as evidence for your analysis.

o Support your ideas with specific lifespan theories discussed in this course, citing and referencing your sources.

From a clinical perspective, assess how these three characters function as a family unit:

· Examine their functioning in relation to a model of resilience appropriate to your specialization, and evaluate their challenges and strengths related to wellness and resilience. As each character transitions to his or her next developmental stage, how will the transition impact the functioning of the family unit?

How do you think clinicians practicing Rogerian therapy would approach these concepts for these clients?

Report Issue

 Discussion Rogerian Therapy

Similar to Freud, Carl Rogers developed his theory from his extensive work with his patients. However, unlike Freud, he believed that people are typically healthy; being mentally healthy is the normal state. Although there are unhealthy people, they are not the norm or what one has to accept and live with throughout one’s life. Furthermore, Rogers believed that each person has one primary motivation—to realize his/her full potential or to be self-actualized. Finally, he posited that neurosis stems from incongruence between one’s real self and one’s ideal self. He applied this to his theory of counseling in the development of three therapeutic criteria that he felt were both necessary and sufficient to help the patient. These three qualities are now the foundation for modern person-centered therapy.

The three qualities that form the foundation of Rogerian therapy are empathy, congruence, and unconditional positive regard. These will be relatively easy to express for people you naturally like but can be difficult to express for people whom you do not like nor agree with.

Imagine that you are a psychologist working with a population of individuals that tend to be more difficult to work with, such as sex offenders, elderly patients with dementia, or mentally challenged children. Use the Internet, Argosy University library resources, and your textbook to research the concepts of Rogerian therapy and respond to the following questions:

  • Realistically, do you think it is possible to be congruent and to extend empathy and unconditional positive regard to these clients in a psychotherapeutic context? Why or why not?
  • How do you think clinicians practicing Rogerian therapy would approach these concepts for these clients?
  • How might Rogerian therapy be a helpful strategy for these clients?
  • Is it possible these concepts of Rogerian therapy could hinder treatment?

Summarize your vision of a career in psychology and your main SMART goals. How did the practitioner-scholar model help clarify and strengthen your vision of your future in the field, and your professional goals?

Psychology Practitioner-Scholars

As stated in the unit introduction, connecting scholarship and practice is critical for professionals in psychology. In one of the unit studies, you examined both the scholar-practitioner model, as presented in the McClintock article, and Capella’s learning model, which is based on the ideas in the McClintock article. In Capella’s learning model, the master’s level degree program is described as practitioner-scholar, to distinguish it from the doctoral degree program, which is described as scholar-practitioner.

This discussion will provide you with an opportunity to enhance and deepen your understanding of the scholar-practitioner model in general and the practitioner-scholar expectations at Capella in particular. At the same time, it will enable you to get valuable feedback from your peers on your vision statement and action plan. Your thinking and exchanges in this discussion will support your success in the assignment that you will submit in the next unit.

In your initial post:

  • Compare McClintock’s scholar-practitioner model and Capella’s scholar-practitioner learning model. You probably notice that only Capella uses the term practitioner-scholar. What aspects of McClintock’s model supports Capella’s learning model?
  • Describe the role of a practitioner-scholar within the field of psychology.
  • Discuss how the role of a practitioner-scholar will influence you to become a wise consumer of research and theory.
  • Summarize your vision of a career in psychology and your main SMART goals. How did the practitioner-scholar model help clarify and strengthen your vision of your future in the field, and your professional goals?
  • Explain how this model might apply to your studies as a graduate learner in psychology at Capella.

If you had any trouble understanding the scholar-practitioner model or its application in the field of psychology, use this discussion to receive support from your peers and instructor to work through your challenges.

Be sure to integrate both readings into your discussion response and cite them in APA style.

Response Guidelines

Read your peers’ posts, and respond to at least two. Try to choose posts that have had the fewest responses thus far.

  • What can you add to clarify your peers’ understanding?
  • What strategies can you suggest to help your peers connect this model to their vision and goals for their future careers?
  • Do their goals meet the criteria of being specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART)?
  • Can you think of any way the goals could be improved to better meet these criteria?

What is your purpose for interacting with them?

One of the many reasons social workers conduct needs assessment is to provide support for new programs. Social workers have many methods available to collect necessary data for a needs assessment.

Social workers can use existing data from a wide range of sources, including local and national reports by government and nonprofit agencies, as well as computerized mapping resources. Social workers can gather new data through interviews and surveys with individuals and focus groups. This data can provide the evidence that supports the need for the program.

To prepare for this Assignment, review the needs assessment plans that you and your classmates generated for this week’s Discussion. Also, review the logic models that you created in Week 7 and any literature on needs of caregivers that you used to generate them.

Consider the following to stimulate your thinking:

· Getting information about the needs of the target population:

  • Who would informants be?
  • What is your purpose for        interacting with them?
  • What questions would you ask?
  • What method would you use        (interview, focus group, questionnaire)?

· Finding potential clients:

  • Who would informants be?
  • What is your purpose for        interacting with them?
  • What questions would you ask?
  • What method would you use?

· Interacting with the target population:

  • Who would informants be?
  • What is your purpose for        interacting with them?
  • What questions would you ask?
  • What method would you use?

Identify the model of treatment group (i.e., support, education, teams, or treatment conferences).

Assignment 1: Group Typology

As a clinical social worker it is important to understand group typology in order to choose the appropriate group method for a specific population or problem. Each type of group has its own approach and purpose. Two of the more frequently used types of groups are task groups and intervention groups.

For this Assignment, review the “Cortez Multimedia” case study, and identify a target behavior or issue that needs to be ameliorated, decreased, or increased. In a 2-page report, complete the following:

· Choose either a treatment group or task group as your intervention for Paula Cortez.

· Identify the model of treatment group (i.e., support, education, teams, or treatment conferences).

· Using the typologies described in the Toseland & Rivas (2017) piece, describe the characteristics of your group. For instance, if you choose a treatment group that is a support group, what would be the purpose, leadership, focus, bond, composition, and communication?

· Include the advantages and disadvantages of using this type of group as an intervention.
